MARKEZINA GREDA

Northwest from Klis there is a Kozjak cliff called Markezinagreda. There is a bigger hilltop mentioned by Ivo Babić, PhD in his study about hilltops and tumulus’s between Trogir and Split. What we have here is one of the biggest hilltops in this area which was used even in the late antique period. The remains of its rampart drywalls stretch in a form of an arch from one to the other edge of the Kozjak cliffs fortifying in that way a slight slope on the north side and since there is a cliff on the south there was no need to fortify that part of the hilltop. On the south part there was a narrow path leading from Klis to Markezinagreda, so it was not cut off from the Klis hilltop. Markezinagreda had an important strategic role because, along with the Klis hilltop and a smaller hilltop above Odž, it protected the passages to the sea.
