Crkvine archaelogical site is two kilometres northeast from Klis along the southern side of Klis – Dugopolje state highway in a town called Klapavice. Don FraneBulić did the first archaelogical excavation here in 1906 when he explored the north-eastern part of the complex and discovered a one-boat old Christian church, a tank and four medieval graves. Between April and July, 2006 there was a revision excavation in Crkvine and they found out that there were two churches: a northern one, previously discovered during Bulić’s exploration, and a southern one with a narthex and an inscribed apse. They also discovered 25 graves.
Klapavice archaelogical site is an extremely significant monumental complex which represents the life in the Dalmatian highlands from the late ancient period up to the Middle Ages. Origin: 5th – 16th century.
